Warming up for the throwing events has a similar goal to the sprinter's warm up. We want to increase the force of the thrower's muscle contractions and speed up their muscle contraction rate, to maximize their power and speed. The big difference is that we are focusing on different muscles groups for the throws.

Because of the highly ballistic nature of the jumps, they require a solid warm up before training and competition. Warming up readies the jumper's muscles by increasing the force of their muscle contractions and speeding up muscle contraction rate, providing that much needed power and speed on the runway.

Behind every successful distance runner, or any well-performed athlete for that matter, you’ll find a coach somewhere in the background. Most of us think a coach is just there to give us training schedules, but that’s a relatively minor part of his or her role.

verbacus.jpgMICK: It is a pleasure to talk to you. Nice run in Boston (4:03 mile). It must be quite a challenge racing with 10-15 other sub 4 minute milers. I read that you have reduced your mileage to about 60 miles per week to prepare for the mile. What kind of mileage do you normally do?

puma-youtube.jpgIt has been scientifically proven the world over: Jamaicans are fast. We've spent the last decade studying what makes this possible. Is it their well-rounded diet of Trelawney yams? Is it because they balance their daily training with victory dance practice? After much time spent with our Jamaican athletes, we found the answer was rather simple.
