This weekend's Berlin Marathon may well be one of the greatest footraces ever. Kenenisa Bekele, considered by many, if not most, to be the greatest distance runner ever is only the second fastest man over the 26.2 mile distance to be toeing the line. His NN teammate, Eliud Kipchoge, is the fastest ever over the classical Olympic distance. He has won in Berlin before, is the reigning Olympic Champion and has run the absolute fastest marathon ever, with Nike's much hyped run in Milan earlier this year. Kipchoge has only lost one of the eight marathons he has started and will look to set a blazing fast, record-eligible time on the streets of the German capital. Bekele is officially the second fastest marathoner ever and still holds the 5,000 and 10,000 world records to go along with several World and Olympic championships on the track and in Cross Country. Wilson Kipsang shouldn't be overlooked though, he is a former World Record holder in the marathon and has run the fastest official time of 2017 so far with a big 2:03:58 win in Tokyo this spring.
I think this is the best road race to happen in this millennium so far. Although, with Mo Farah set to focus on the marathon, that could potentially add one more superstar to these battles in the future. No need to dream for now though, we have quite the race to watch Sunday morning.
Abraham Cheroben clocked a world-leading 58:40 to win the Copenhagen Half Marathon, an IAAF Gold Label Road Race, on Sunday (17).
