Kisa and Ritzenhein
SAN GIORGIO SU LEGNANO (ITA, Jan 6): Dathan Ritzenhein of the USA and Janet Kisa of Kenya were the victors at the 58th Campaccio Cross Country (IAAF Permit). The women’s race came down to the last 200m, with Kisa edging her compatriot Peres Jepchirchir by just one second (19:00-19:01) over the 6km. In her debut on the European cross country circuit, Kenya’s Betsy Saina finished 3rd in 19:04. She was followed by World Junior 3000m 5th placer Etagegn Woldu of Ethiopia (19:45) and Neely Spence of the USA (19:56). Best European was Almensch Belete of Belgium as 6th 20:11 ahead of top Italian Federica Del Buono 20:27. Ritzenhein held off a strong challenge by 2012 European Cross Country champion Andrea Lalli in the men’s 10km race, running from the front to a 29:08 finish. Lalli lost contact in the last kilometre, put was still only one second back at the end. European marathon champion Daniele Meucci was 3rd in 29:23, while European 3000mSC medallist Krystian Zalewski from Poland was 6th in 29:58.

President Wirz new vision
LAUSANNE (SUI): European Athletics President Hansjorg Wirz mentioned in his Christmas and New Year message that "it is also obvious that we don’t have a clear qualification system to promote the Championships compared to a sport such as football, which promotes the main championships through the qualifiers. It’s hard to compete with such a set-up and to create awareness. Thus, we must better establish the European Athletics Championships brand, integrating and linking much closer together three different elements – the one-day meeting structure, the European Athletics Championships format and the championship qualification system – into one attractive product that continues to appeal to the public." That could lead to changes or new events to fulfill this connections.

OTHER NEWS

LONDON (GBR): The London Marathon Charitable Trust (the Trust) has announced that it has awarded a total of £4,820,113 in grants in 2014. £3,470,113 of this total was made to 70 organisations in the areas in which the London Marathon Ltd organised events in 2014.  An additional £1,150,000 was allocated to Olympic Legacy projects, while a £200,000 grant was put into the London Marathon Playing Fields and Major Projects fund. The Trust has now allocated more than £56.4 million in grants to over 1000 organisations in London, Surrey, Silverstone, Birmingham and Liverpool.

PARIS (FRA): The French Anti-Doping agency (AFLD) has suspended James Theuri for one year after he missed three doping tests, report lequipe.fr. The former Kenyan will not be allowed to compete untilDecember 23, 2015. Theuri missed three random doping controls in the period from October 2013 to May 2014. He had been acquitted by the French Athletics Federation, but this decision was appealed by the AFLD.

BRASILIA (BRA): Brasilia is set to pull out of its hosting of the 2019 Summer Universiade, inform insidethegames. The newly-elected Governor Rodrigo Rollemberg, who came into power on January 1, said that he plans for the city to withdraw from hosting the event for financial reasons.

SAN FRANCISCO (USA): A growing anti-Olympic-bid movement in San Francisco is threatening the city’s chances of becoming the USOC’s candidate city to host the 2024 Olympics, inform insidethegames. The SF No 2024 Olympics group has been strongly voicing their concerns about the possible bid. They believe that hosting the Olympics would mean that funding would be cut in important areas such as healthcare. They have threatened political action if the USOC selects the Californian city.

NAIROBI (KEN): 1987 World marathon champion Douglas Wakiihuri is the latest Kenyan athletics figure to call for the resignation of Athletics Kenya’s president Isaiah Kiplagat, report standardmedia.co.ke. “The AK chairman and his people need to resign,” said the former London Marathon winner, adding, “Those caught in the doping saga in Russia, Jamaica and IAAF have resigned, why is Kenyan officials still stuck in office?”

SINDELFINGEN (GER): German hurdler Nadine Hildebrand will not compete indoors as she has to undergo surgery on a knee injury, report leichtathletik.de. The 2014 World Indoor 60mH finalist will have an operation on January 7 after suffering with pain in her right knee for the past two months. While her indoor season is over before it started, she still hopes to compete at the 2015 World Championships. Hildebrand was the 3rd fastest European over 60mH in 2014, so she would likely have been a top contender at the European Indoors.

DARMSTADT (GER): Frank Kowalski, the Director of Event Management at the German Athletics Federation (DLV), is tasked with coming up with new ideas to improve the presentation of athletics events, report dpa. “Athletics has to be much shorter,” stated Kowalski, “Formats between three and four hours are still acceptable, longer events no longer work.” Kowalski is frustrated with the current presentation of some meets, saying “Often the athletics is simply presented boring. It would be desirable if more professionalism comes back into the sport.” One meet that he is enthused about is the ISTAF Berlin and its indoor version, while a new indoor meet in Cologne is in the works.

ANTRIM (IRL): The Antrim International Cross Country is taking place on March 14 this year, much later than its usual date in early January. However, the change is not a permanent one, as the organisers intend for the race to revert to its regular January slot in 2016. The change in date is not expected to lead to a decrease in quality of the international field, according to Athletics Northern Ireland's General Secretary John Allen. He said that they will begin to announce some of the athletes, which will be competing in the race, over the coming weeks. Inform BBC.

NAIROBI (KEN): Legendary Kipchoge Keino has called on the Kenyan Government to make doping a criminal offence in an effort to combat the growing problem of performance-enhancing drugs among the country's athletes.  Keino, President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK), is seeking urgent talks with Parliamentary Committee on Sports and Cabinet Secretary for Sports Hassan Wario to get new legislation introduced, including prison sentences for coaches and agents who encourage athletes to take drugs. Informs insidethegames.

JENA (GER): German javelin Diamond League winner Thomas Rohler is at training camp with Norwegian group. In Lanzarote his training is going well as he regularly informs on his website.

COTTBUS (GER): New top name for the Indoor Springer meet in Cottbus on January 27 is pole vault World Indoor Champion Kostas Filippidis of Greece.

NEW YORK (USA): Runnersworld.com informs that Guor Marial, the 2:12 South Sudanese marathoner who competed under the Olympic flag in London in 2012 rather than represent Sudan, has seen his dream of representing South Sudan at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games hit a roadblock. After receiving a scholarship (in effect, a training stipend) from the International Olympic Committee two weeks ago, Marial has been suspended from any activity representing South Sudan by the South Sudan Athletic Federation (SSAF) unless he hands the funds over to them. As the Upper Nile Times explains, the federation's policy is to administer to all its athletes collectively rather than as individuals. The Times reports that the federation told Marial “not to dream” about going to the 2016 Games as a South Sudanese athlete unless he adheres to its dictate.

NEW YORK (USA): Stack.com informs that pop star Rihanna has signed on to become the new face of Puma. Starting in January she will serve as the brand's global ambassador for Women's Training and the creative director for Puma Women. A multi-platinum singer, Rihanna joins with athletes Usain Bolt and Mario Balotelli, who have been integral to the company's recent "Forever Faster" campaign, and fellow singer Solange, who just released her second line late last month.

LONDON (GBR): Insidethegames informs that Daniel Wolff is set to follow in his great grandfather's footsteps after being selected to represent Great Britain at the Special Olympics.  His great grandfather Frederick Wolff won Olympic gold at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, leading off the Great Britain quartet in the 4 x 400 m alongside Godrey Rampling, Godrey Brown and William Roberts, setting a European record of 3:09.0. Wolff, who has autism, has personal bests 58.01 in the 400m and 2:23 in the 800m and will compete at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles.
